Structural Health Monitoring Of The Tamar Suspension Bridge

The Tamar Bridge spans over the River Tamar from Saltash, Cornwall to Plymouth in Devon. In 2001, after 40 years of operation, the Tamar Bridge was widened and strengthened to allow it to carry 40-tonne, heavy goods vehicles and comply with EU requirements.

PC Doney Electrics worked with Fugro Structural Monitoring to install a Structural Monitoring System that monitored the bridge’s behaviour during and after the upgrade. The SMS was used to monitor structure and environment temperatures, cable loads and wind speed and profile; providing engineering information on the performance and condition of the bridge. A dynamic response monitoring system was later added and also further sensors to aid with an ambient vibration survey.
